A sample of activities performed by this section

Lung transplantation and the T.O.P section:
The anesthesia department and ICU have performed extensive and protracted activities in the field of organ transplantation. Since the establishment of T.O.P in this center, anesthesiologists have participated in transferring the brain death patients to this center, intensive care before procurement of the organs, diagnosis and confirmation of brain death, anesthesia during harvest of brain death patients and lung transplantation in the recipients.
About fifty cases of transfer and harvest have been performed so far and nearly 15 cases of lung transplantation and 3 cases of cardiac transplantation have been performed in this center with the significant effective cooperation of anesthesiologists.

Lung lavage:
The anesthesiology department of Masih Daneshvari Hospital as the first and only center in Iran, and also in the region, that has performed whole lung lavage in patients with pulmonary alveolar proteinosis cases since 6 years ago. It is well known that this disease can cause respiratory insufficiency and eventually death and that complete lung lavage is the only effective treatment. So far, about 43 patients have undergone 84 lavages with this method, out of which 7 were children who underwent lavage under cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). The remaining were adult individuals that underwent lavage by one lung ventilation (OLV). The results of the complete lavage were favorable except for 3 cases (one child and two adults). The related reports have been presented as article or lecture in international congresses (the USA, Tunisia, France, Iran,..).

Acute and chronic pain management division:
The anesthesiology department of this center started its activity in the field of diagnosis and management of acute and chronic pains since the year 2000. After conducting 11 research projects and obtaining successful results, this section started its therapeutic activities in late 2002 under the name of Acute Pain Service (APS). Thereafter, chronic pain management service initiated its activity and in 2005 this section expanded its activities by official establishment of "Clinic for diagnosis and management of pain ". At present, this section is ready to perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in all related fields. Also each month, one or two residents of anesthesiology spend their pain management training course in this center.
In 2006, following the introduction of algologist fellowship training course and the evaluation and visit by the Health ministry accreditation personnel and their approval, this center was approved as one of the main divisions for Algology fellowship training and in September 2007 the Pain fellowship training course was started with the presence of a number of fellows in this center
In summary:
Since the year 2000 the activity of the Pain section started after its approval by research activities.
In 2002 Acute Pain Service was officially started.
In 2004 the activity of the chronic pain diagnosis and treatment service was initiated
In 2006, algologist training section was introduced and by 2007 the formal Pain Fellowship training course will be started in this center.
