It was a great privilege and honor for National Research Institute of  Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (NRITLD) to host  " The 3rd NRITLD-ERS Joint International Congress on Pulmonary Disease, Intensive Care and Tuberculosis " with the collaboration of European Respiratory Society (ERS),which took place on 15 - 18 October, 2007 in Tehran - Iran.

First International Workshop on TB HIV/AIDS and harm reduction was held in Tehran by National Research Institute of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease- Masih Daneshvary Hospital in collaboration with Iran Blood Transfusion Organization, WHO Collaborating Center for Tuberculosis, Shaheed Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Middle East Secretariat Office of International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, Infectious Disease and Tropical Medicine Research Center, Tehran Psychiatric Institute of Mental Health Research Centre, Disease Control Department of Ministry of Health , and professors from Harvard, Maryland, and Malaysia Universities from May 3rd through June 1st 2007.

This conference was held by National Research Institute of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease on May 31st through June 2nd 2007 in Mahak Hospital conference hall with collaboration of professors from Harvard University. During this three day conference different aspects of patient management in intensive care unit was put into discussion by Dr. Thompson, Dr. Systrom, and Dr. Harris, pulmonologists form Massachusetts General Hospital and professors from Masih Daneshvary Hospital including Dr. Velayati and Dr. Masjedi.

It is a great privilege and honor for IDB Training Affairs Office (TAO) to host “The 3rd Training  Workshop of Self-Reliance in Vaccine Production on Cleaning Validation" an established event,scheduled to take place on 10-18 July, 2007 in Tehran –Iran. This professional workshop will be jointly held by Razi Vaccine & Serum Research Institute (RVSRI) and TAO. Different participants from Islamic Vaccine Producers would attend this workshop and the expert trainers are Dr. Mary Mazur and Mr. Steven Weitzel from International Pharmaceutical Academy (IPA), Canada.

Following the successful holding of the First Training Workshop which was held 4-14 April, 2006, in Iran,Now,It is our greatest pleasure toannounce that "the Second Training Workshop of Self
Reliance in Vaccine Production(SRVP)focused on Manufacturing Process Validation"  and supported by Islamic Development Bank was successfully organized by Training Affairs Office (TAO) and  Razi Vaccine and Serum Research Institute (RVSRI) in January 13-20, 2007 in Iran.

Dr. Mohammad Reza Masjedi, pulmonologist, was elected as the secretary general of IUATLD for the 4th time in a row.
“ On the 38th international congress of IUATLD held in Cape town, South Africa,  Dr. Mohammad Reza Masjedi, professor and faculty member of Shaheed Beheshti University of Medical Sciences was elected as the secretary general of this union”, reported by the public relations office of Masih Daneshvari Hospital.

Information gathering was performed by Ms.Keykhah head of NRITLD library, to meet the needs of researches mainly active in the field of tuberculosis and lung diseases.

First " Endobronchial sonography (EBUS) " workshop was held in Interventional Bronchoscopy Unit of Masih Daneshvary Hospital of shahid Beheshty University in collaboration with Hidelberg University of Germany during  17 and 18 February 2008 .Physicians from different universities throughout the country participated in this workshop.During help of endobronchial sonography was instructed by Dr.Felra Herth , professor of Interventional Pulmonology of Hidelberg University.Of the other educational activities of Prof Herth during this workshop, instructings all participants, while performing EBUS can be mentioned.Also performing rigid bronchoscopy and autofluorescence bronchoscopy  was taught to all participants by Dr.Herth during the workshop.

 
The 22nd gathering of stop TB committee was held in NRITLD with the participation of Dr. Masjedi deputy of stop TB committee, Dr. Gorji, Dr. Javanbakht,  , Mr. Norouzi  representative of Imdad committee, Dr. Shakibi from the military health office, Dr. Mokhtarzadeh from Basij Jameh Pezeshki and representatives of Medicare and social security organization. In this meeting, obstacles against implementation of TB control programs were discussed.
Golshifteh Farahani, who also attended this meeting,  expressed her sorrow regarding the presence of TB in our country which mostly affects low income families and expressed her readiness for cooperation with this committee as its ambassador. At the end, she visited the TB ward of Masih Daneshvari Hospital.

With the efforts of Masih Daneshvari Hospital, a workshop on familiarity with the Iranian national medical library was held.
This workshop was held in NRITLD with the attendance of Dr. Momenzadeh head of Shahid Beheshti  University of Medical sciences central library, Dr. Zargar and more than 20 personnel including faculty members, researchers, general practitioners and nurses.
Membership in university library’s website, using ISI data bank and its membership, use of end note software in writing manuscripts and references and introducing Scopus, the largest data bank in the world, were among the main issues discussed in this workshop.

A 3-day workshop on sleep disorders was held in NRITLD with the aim of providing a basic foundation for the development of the science of sleep disorders . The instructor of this workshop was Dr. Amir Sharafkhaneh, subspecialist of sleep disorders and pulmonary diseases from Baylor College of Medicine. How to analyze sleep test, common sleep disorders such as obstructive apnea, central apnea, Chain-Stokes respiration and pediatric sleep disorders were among the subjects discussed in this workshop. Participants were pulmonology fellowship trainees, ICU fellows, psychiatrists, interns and internal medicine residents.

The advent of telemedicine has revolutionized patient management through out the world. This service helps patients in shortest possible time and with least costs and on the other hand prevents patient transfer to secondary hospitals for specialized care.
Dr. Fadaizadeh, head of telemedicine research center stated: Research , education , and medical management of patients are our aims of establishing this research center and it is hoped that we will be able to help incline our country's health status via this new service.

A novel advance deserving Nobel Prize
During a press conference held on Dec 13th 2007, with the attendance of Dr. Ali Reza Zali, Head of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Dr. Ali Akbar Velayati, Director of NRITLD, Dr. Mohammad Reza Masjedi, Deputy Director of NRITLD, Dr. Jalaleddin Ghanavi, Researcher and Head of Experimental research unit of NRITLD, the first trachea produced by tissue engineering technique was introduced.

This gathering was held in Arasbaran house of culture on December 12th, 2007 with the attendance of Dr. Ali Akbar Velayati, director of NRITLD, Dr. Ali Reza Zali, Head of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, a number of donor and recipient families, and artists from different fields of art.
